Mike was born in Birmingham and grew up in Palmerdale, Alabama.  Mike's mother raised his sister and him after his father died when Mike was four years old.  Mike attended public schools in Pinson, Alabama and, after graduating from Pinson Valley High School, worked while attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham ("UAB").  He graduated from UAB in 1992 with a bachelor of science degree.

Mike's father died in an industrial accident while at work.  He first became interested in representing people who had been injured or killed after seeing first hand how an attorney helped his family, after the loss of his father.  “Representing injured people, people who have lost loved ones, or folks who have been taken advantage of is very personal to me.”

Mike worked his way through law school and graduated, early, with honors, in December 1996.  He took the Alabama bar exam in February 1997, and began practicing law with Pittman, Hooks, Dutton, & Hollis, P.C. (now Pittman, Dutton, Kirby & Hellums, P.C.) in April 1997.
Mike practices in the areas of product liability, auto and trucking collisions, medical malpractice, medical device, pharmaceutical litigation, premises liability, fraud, and bad faith.  Mike handles cases throughout the State of Alabama and tries cases in state and federal courts.  He and two of his partners obtained one of the largest medical malpractice verdicts in Jefferson County, Alabama and one of the largest product liability verdicts in Dekalb County, Alabama.

Mike is admitted to practice before the Alabama Supreme Court and the United States District Courts for the Northern, Middle, Southern Districts of Alabama.  Mike is a member of the Alabama State Bar, Birmingham Bar Association, Alabama Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Association for Justice.  He also serves on various committees for these groups.
Mike is a former professor of civil procedure at the Birmingham School of Law.  He also speaks and lectures at continuing legal education programs.

Mike is married to the former Amy Elliott, his high school sweetheart, and they have two children, Jake and Elli Anne.  Mike and his family attend church in Trussville, Alabama.  Mike volunteers his time coaching his children in little league sports.  Mike enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, exercising, and practicing law.
