Joel Alexander became "Of Counsel" with Pittman, Dutton, Kirby and Hellums, P.C. on April 1, 2005. Since his admission to the Alabama State Bar in 1983, Joel has devoted most of his time and energy representing injured railroad employees. However, he also represents individuals in other personal injury matters such as worker’s compensation and motor vehicle accidents.
Joel obtained a significant amount of experience in railroad operations prior to his graduation from law school. He worked for Southern Railway from 1967 to 1976 in various capacities. He began his railroad career as a track laborer in New Orleans, Louisiana and after numerous transfers and promotions rose to the level of Bridge and Building Supervisor. Joel was a third generation railroader. He has an intimate knowledge of the job duties and responsibilities associated with the railroad industry. With his years of experience on the railroad and in representing injured railroad employees, he has acquired skills essential to handling any kind of litigation involving railroad employers. Having grown up in a "railroad family,” Joel feels a deep commitment to be a strong advocate for the rights of railroad employees and their families.
Joel is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and obtained his law degree from Birmingham School of Law. While attending law school, he was initiated into Sigma Delta Kappa Honorary Law Fraternity for superior academic achievement. He retired as a Major, Military Intelligence, United States Army Reserve after 25 years of service. Joel is past president of the Birmingham Chapter, Reserve Officers Association. He is an adjunct professor at Birmingham School of Law and has served as Professor of Trial Advocacy for the past 23 years.
He is a member of the Alabama State Bar and is admitted to practice in all Alabama State and Federal Courts. Additionally, and in furtherance of his representation of injured railroad employees covered under the Federal Employer's Liability Act, Joel has been admitted pro hac vice in Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee.
Joel completed his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree at the University of Montevallo in 1978. He is married to Cindy Moye. They are members of Heritage Place Church of Christ. Joel’s son, Joel IV “Corky” Alexander presently works as an investigator in FELA cases. Joel’s son, Geoffrey Alexander is an Assistant District Attorney in Mobile, Alabama. Joel’s daughter, Sarah Alexander is presently in elementary school. Joel has five grandchildren as well.
